How to check clothing sale prices

A big discount is a claim, not proof. Before buying, check whether the price is low for that exact garment. These five checks help you separate useful markdowns from impressive-looking labels.

1. Read what the comparison price means

A crossed-out price might mean the store’s former price, the manufacturer’s suggested price, or a comparison with similar merchandise. Those are not interchangeable. A suggested retail price does not establish what shoppers usually pay.

The FTC’s pricing guides distinguish genuine former prices from artificial reference prices. A former price should have been regularly offered for a reasonably substantial period. That does not always require completed sales. Public price observations show asking prices, not what every buyer paid.

2. Match the exact item

Copy the garment’s style or item code. Compare that code, fabric, cut, color and size across listings. Two jackets with the same brand and similar photographs can be different products. A lower price for another color is useful only if you want that color.

Check the brand’s own listing and other established retailers when available. Matching a style code helps compare prices; it does not independently prove that a seller’s merchandise is genuine. Check who actually sells the item, especially on marketplaces.

3. Separate outlet products from mainline markdowns

Some outlet clothing is made specifically for outlets. It may have different fabric, lining or construction from regular-store clothing. The brand name alone does not establish an equivalent product. Ask whether the garment is outlet-specific before comparing it with a mainline item’s price.

Outlet-specific does not automatically mean poor quality or counterfeit. Judge the garment and its price on their own merits. Check whether outlet purchases can be returned to regular stores; do not assume they can.

4. Look for price history, not just today’s percentage

Dated observations of the same item provide a stronger comparison than a single crossed-out number. Note the store, date, exact variant and any conditions, including membership discounts or promotion codes. A sale price repeated every week may be the ordinary asking price in practice.

Without reliable history, call the markdown unverified, not automatically fraudulent. You can still compare today’s available prices, but avoid claiming a precise discount from a usual price you cannot establish.

5. Calculate what you will actually spend

Add shipping, taxes and required fees before comparing stores. Confirm your size is available at the advertised price. Read final-sale exclusions, return deadlines and return-shipping charges before paying. An unfamiliar fit with expensive returns can erase a small price advantage.

Save the listing, price, return policy and receipt. If the price changes later, those records explain what you agreed to buy. Passing these checks can establish a useful comparison, not guaranteed savings or guaranteed authenticity.
